U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is praising IBM's announcement that it achieved what he called the world's first sub-1 nanometer semiconductor technology at Albany NanoTech.
Schumer said the milestone builds on federal CHIPS and Science Act investments intended to strengthen semiconductor research and manufacturing across upstate New York.
According to Schumer's office, IBM's work at Albany NanoTech previously produced the world's first 7-nanometer chip and first 2-nanometer chip. The new technology is described as a .7 nanometer chip.
Schumer said Albany NanoTech is also expected to be home to a major IBM quantum wafer fabrication project supported by $1 billion in federal CHIPS research and development funding.
His office also pointed to other semiconductor investments across upstate New York, including Micron's planned Central New York memory chip complex, GlobalFoundries funding, Corning's Canton expansion, Edwards Vacuum's Genesee County facility, TTM Technologies in Onondaga County and Menlo Micro's planned Tompkins County investment.
