Residents and organizers opposed to a proposed data center on Cayuga Lake will hold a public presentation Thursday in downtown Ithaca.
The event, “No Data Center on Cayuga Lake,” is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 25 at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca, 306 North Aurora St.
Organizers said the presentation will cover data centers, potential harms, the proposed project in the town of Lansing and steps residents, elected officials, business owners and community organizations can take.
The program is expected to open with words from Samuel George, a Bear Clan leader and one of the 10 Sachems of the Cayuga Nation. Speakers listed by organizers include Ken Wolkin, president of FLX Strong; Steve Daly, managing attorney with Citizen Environmental Law; Assemblymember Anna Kelles; Dan Lamb, deputy supervisor of the town of Dryden; and Melissa Hoffman, organizer with Food & Water Watch.
The event is co-sponsored by several organizations, including FLX Strong, Cayuga Lake Environmental Action Now, No Data Center FLX, Sustainable Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake Guardian, Food & Water Watch, Sunrise Ithaca and others.
Organizers said TeraWulf, a bitcoin mining company that has shifted toward artificial intelligence data centers, is proposing a 300-megawatt AI data center on the site of a former coal plant in Lansing.
Materials including lawn signs, shirts, stickers, fact sheets and flyers are expected to be available at the event.
