Seneca Lake webinar to focus on harmful algal blooms and phosphorus

Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association will host a webinar Wednesday on harmful algal blooms and efforts to reduce phosphorus entering Seneca Lake.

The Seneca Lake Deep Dive webinar, “Understanding Harmful Algae Blooms,” is scheduled for 7 to 8 p.m. June 24 and will feature Mark Petzold.

Petzold has more than three decades of engineering experience and joined the Seneca Lake Pure Waters board in 2022. The organization said he has led water quality initiatives involving PFAS and neonicotinoid pesticide testing, DEC WAVES stream monitoring and a partnership with SUNY ESF to measure phosphorus loads from streams in the Seneca Lake watershed.

The webinar will focus on the connection between phosphorus and harmful algal blooms, projects aimed at reducing phosphorus and how phosphorus loads can be used to measure the success of those efforts.

Pure Waters said the presentation follows a 2024 lake-wide harmful algal bloom event along the northern 10 miles of Seneca Lake and a review of the Seneca-Keuka Nine Element Plan for Phosphorus, which was released in 2022.

The webinar will include a 30-minute presentation and a question-and-answer period. The meeting link listed by the organization is https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88279580882?pwd=KvcKMrekUJy9obIaK0YFwUIo7Mw8bA.1.
