Yellowstone’s Dutton Ranch Twist Reveals the Real Villain Behind the 10 Petal Mystery
The Yellowstone universe has always thrived on deep family secrets, shifting loyalties, and surprise power plays. The spinoff Dutton Ranch, which follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they try to make their mark in the unforgiving Texas landscape, has been steadily building tension. What began as a story about the iconic Montana couple building a new empire has increasingly become a dark, multigenerational saga centered on their neighbors, the powerful 10 Petal Ranch.
Fans have been speculating for weeks about the mysterious figure working from the shadows: Mariano Reyes, portrayed in different timelines by Bobby Soto and Raoul Max Trujillo. Mariano was widely theorized to be a ruthless, cartel-connected villain driving the region’s downfall after first appearing through intimidating, ominous phone calls to 10 Petal matriarch Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening). Episode 7, however, flips that theory on its head with a shocking twist that reveals the true threat behind the ranch’s biggest modern-day mystery.
Mariano Reyes: The Truth
Episode 7 uses a gripping flashback structure to tear down everything viewers thought they knew about Mariano. In a flashback to August 1981, a young, twentysomething Beulah Jackson visits the famous Billy Bob’s Texas nightclub in Fort Worth. Her companion is not surrounded by cartel enforcers. Instead, he is a young Mariano Reyes, who proudly describes himself as the “top hand” at the 10 Petal Ranch.
When Beulah is lured away and violently assaulted by a manipulative mechanic named Luke (Cameron Cowperthwaite), it is Mariano who desperately searches for her. He finds her battered and bloodied by the roadside, and what he shows is not malice but genuine gentleness, concern, and loyalty. He even offers to help her create a cover story about a mechanical bull accident to protect her from her father’s unpredictable wrath. He was not a monster; he was her guardian.
The episode ends on an even darker memory. Beulah, now pregnant, has Mariano drive her to Luke’s house. She walks inside and shoots her attacker dead while Mariano watches from the car, horrified. This confirms that Luke is the biological father of Beulah’s eldest and most reckless son, Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney). It also reveals that Beulah and Mariano have been bound together by two devastating secrets for decades: her assault and Luke’s murder.
The Real Villain Comes Forward
Episode 7 clears Mariano as a deeply loyal ally rather than a cartel threat. Instead, it reveals that the real villain destroying the 10 Petal Ranch from within is Rob-Will Jackson.
Mariano’s modern-day calls may have seemed threatening at first, but they are recast as desperate attempts to guide Beulah through a growing family coup. Rob-Will is the one with true malice. Born out of a cycle of violence, he has become a manipulative and toxic force within the Jackson family. Without a shred of remorse, he blackmails his own mother, using her past against her to force her to announce him as the new head of the 10 Petal operation during the ranch’s grand 190th-anniversary celebration.
This act of betrayal deprives Joaquin Reyes (Juan Pablo Raba), who is heavily implied to be the result of a later secret love affair between Beulah and Mariano, of his rightful inheritance. Beulah is left devastated and suffers a massive, life-threatening stroke at the very altar of her family’s legacy, pushed there by Rob-Will’s vicious extortion.
Mariano Reyes may not be the enemy after all. He could be the only person capable of rising from the shadows to help Joaquin dismantle Rob-Will’s tyrannical takeover. As Dutton Ranch heads toward its high-stakes finale, the battle lines are officially drawn—not between rival ranches, but within the bloodstained history of the 10 Petal Ranch itself.
