Daveigh Chase latest Hollywood update draws attention as fans track her recent career and public appearances

Daveigh Chase Had Vision of Changing Lives with Her Art Years Before Her Tragic Death

Before her death, former child star Daveigh Chase, who sadly passed away at the age of 35, shared her hopes for the kind of legacy she wanted to leave behind in Hollywood.

In a poignant 2009 interview for Interview magazine, the actress said she wanted to create art that mattered, not just entertained. “I just want to make something that I love and that people will respect,” Chase said at the time. “I want to do things that will change someone’s life, not something they’ll forget about tomorrow.”

A Surprise Trip to Hollywood

In that same conversation, Chase revealed that her initial entry into the entertainment industry was actually the result of an unexpected twist of fate. Her mother was involved in a serious car accident on a road trip to Los Angeles in 1998 and was legally banned from driving for six months.

Rather than returning to their home in Albany, Oregon, as scheduled, the family stayed in Southern California. At age 8, Chase seized the opportunity and began to aggressively pursue her dream of acting.

That brush with misfortune ultimately launched a wildly diverse career, with major roles that shaped a generation of cinema:

Lilo Pelekai from Lilo & Stitch (2002): She lent her voice to the quirky, beloved Hawaiian heroine of Disney’s animated classic, winning millions of hearts and an Annie Award.

Samara Morgan from The Ring (2002): That same year, she starred opposite Naomi Watts as the terrifying, vengeful, well-dwelling spirit in a complete tonal shift, earning an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.

Chihiro Ogino from Spirited Away (2001): She gave voice to the lead character in the English version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning masterpiece.

Samantha Darko in Donnie Darko (2001): She played the younger sister of the title character, Jake Gyllenhaal, a role she reprised in the 2009 sequel S. Darko.

Rhonda Volmer in Big Love (2006–2011): She played the underage, manipulative child-bride of a religious cult leader for five seasons of the hit HBO drama.

A Tragic End & Online Controversy

The actress’s bright early Hollywood beginnings stand in stark, painful contrast to her final days. TMZ on Wednesday confirmed the death of the actress on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, after a fierce battle with meningitis that quickly turned deadly with sepsis, to a man claiming to be Chase’s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez. She had reportedly been admitted to a Los Angeles hospital earlier in the month with severe malnutrition.

Her death has been overshadowed by a bitter dispute between Hernandez and the actress’s long-time professional team.

Shortly before her death, Hernandez set up a GoFundMe campaign under Chase’s name to help raise money for her last days and medical care. He wrote that her condition had become critical. “All she ever wanted was a place where we could live together, feel safe, be happy,” he said.

Long-time manager John Ryan was quick to publicly condemn the fundraising effort, speaking out to the California Post.

“Apparently, a man claiming to be her ‘boyfriend’ that none of our friends or her family has heard of has set up a GoFundMe on her and her family’s behalf. I can tell you that Daveigh has a trust account at SAG that will cover all costs,” Ryan said, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the fundraiser.

Ryan also said the star’s inner circle had been actively trying to locate her to provide medical and personal interventions after being alerted to a heartbreaking video taken in late 2025, showing the star in an incredibly fragile state.

Concluding Thought:

The sadness surrounding Daveigh Chase’s last days cannot negate the lasting impact she had on so many. At only 12 years old, she shared the idea that “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” She may have fallen through the cracks of the very city that made her famous, but her timeless characters ensure that her childhood dream was well and truly realized: she made art that changed lives, and she will absolutely never be forgotten.
