Community rallies around Seneca County corrections officer battling stage 4 cancer

Friends, family and community members are coming together to support a Seneca County corrections officer after a recent diagnosis of stage 4 esophageal cancer that has spread to his liver.

A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by Jaylyn Ticconi on behalf of Amber Harris is helping raise money for Glen Harris and his family as he begins treatment that will include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and ongoing testing. Organizers say Harris, who has worked as a corrections officer with the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office for six years, has stepped away from work to focus on his health.

According to the fundraiser, Harris’ wife, Amber, has taken leave from her job to help coordinate his care and assist him throughout treatment. The family is also facing mounting expenses related to medical care, travel, co-pays and household bills while caring for seven children and three grandchildren.

As of Saturday morning, the fundraiser had raised more than $4,400 toward its $6,000 goal from dozens of donors. Organizers described Harris as a hardworking and devoted husband, father and friend and said community support will help ease some of the financial burden facing the family during treatment.

Supporters are also encouraging those unable to contribute financially to share Harris’ story and keep the family in their thoughts as they navigate the challenges ahead.
