Property tax grievances in Tompkins County fell to unusually low levels this year, according to Tompkins Weekly, as officials paused most reassessments during a major technology overhaul. Only 66 property owners challenged their assessments, far below the roughly 200 filings the county typically saw before the pandemic.
Most homeowners saw their assessments remain unchanged in 2026, with the county limiting updates mainly to new construction and major property changes. Assessment officials say the pause will give staff time to transition to a new database system that will eventually let residents file exemptions and appeals online.
The county expects the slowdown to continue through 2028 before a full countywide revaluation returns in 2029. Officials also stressed that local spending decisions, not assessments alone, play a major role in determining property tax bills.
