Route 34 bridge project remains on schedule for fall reopening

The $24 million Route 34 bridge replacement project over the Seneca River remains on schedule for completion this fall, according to an update shared by Weedsport Community News after speaking with the project’s construction manager.

The publication reported that Vector Construction officials said the project remains “absolutely on perfect schedule” and continues to target completion on or before Oct. 26, restoring a key transportation link that has been closed since December and disrupted travel for thousands of motorists.

According to the update, state transportation officials previously indicated that contractors could face significant daily penalties if the project misses its completion deadline. However, another Department of Transportation representative recently suggested the contractor may have until Nov. 1 because of delays in the bridge’s closure at the start of the project.

The bridge closure has forced drivers onto lengthy detours using Routes 31, 38 and 370. Many motorists have also used Bonta Bridge as an alternate route, though local residents have reported traffic conflicts and concerns about vehicles disregarding the one-lane bridge’s traffic signal. Others have opted for Quimby’s Bridge near Jack’s Reef, which has generally experienced fewer reported issues.

The Route 34 bridge spans the Barge Canal and Seneca River corridor and serves as an important connection between communities in Cayuga County. If construction continues as planned, the bridge is expected to reopen in less than five months.
