Bristol fire department handled 30 calls in May

The Bristol Volunteer Fire Department responded to 30 emergency calls during May, including several requests for mutual aid assistance in neighboring communities.

According to the department, six of those calls involved providing support to surrounding fire districts for incidents including unattended outdoor fires, a possible gas leak and a structure fire. Officials said mutual aid remains a critical part of ensuring adequate emergency response coverage throughout the region.

The department also highlighted the continued importance of its helicopter landing zone, which allows ambulances from nearby communities to transfer critically ill or injured patients to air medical crews more quickly. Fire officials said the landing zone helps reduce the time needed to get patients to advanced medical care.

Training remained a major focus throughout the month. Firefighters recently completed their annual OSHA-required training and will begin CPR recertification in June. The department said firefighters and EMTs are equipped to provide lifesaving care, including CPR and automated external defibrillator use, while awaiting ambulance transport. Upcoming training will include live-fire exercises and vehicle extrication drills.

Looking ahead, the department is preparing for its annual clambake fundraiser in September. Officials said the event typically attracts nearly 600 attendees and are seeking raffle baskets and door prize donations from local businesses.
