Phelps projects move forward with .5 million in state funding

A long-planned hotel renovation, upgrades to a popular village park and a new community gathering space are among seven projects moving forward in Phelps after receiving final approval for $4.5 million in state funding.

The projects were formally approved as part of New York’s NY Forward program, which awarded funding to initiatives designed to strengthen downtown Phelps through economic development, recreation, housing and tourism investments. The projects represent the next phase of a revitalization strategy aimed at building on the village’s historic character while creating new destinations for residents and visitors.

The largest single award, $1.35 million, will fund the creation of a multi-purpose space at the Phelps Community Center. Village officials have identified the facility as a key community asset and envision the project creating flexible space for public events, programs and gatherings.

Another major investment will direct $975,000 toward the redevelopment of the historic Phelps Hotel. Plans call for new lodging and dining options in the downtown landmark, a project viewed as critical to attracting visitors and supporting tourism-related economic activity. The village will also receive $750,000 to improve recreation opportunities at Crooked Bridge Park, one of the community’s most visible public spaces.

Additional funding will support a $550,000 streetscape improvement project along Main and Church streets, aimed at improving the appearance and walkability of downtown. Smokin’ Tails Distillery will receive $292,000 to create new event spaces, while another $292,000 award will help upgrade commercial and residential space at 114 Main St. A separate $291,000 Small Project Grant Fund will provide assistance for smaller revitalization efforts throughout the downtown district.

Village leaders have said the projects are intended to complement one another by creating more reasons for people to live, work, visit and spend time in downtown Phelps. Construction timelines for the individual projects are expected to be announced as funding agreements are finalized and project planning advances.
