Cato woman accused of giving false name, fleeing deputies after shoplifting complaint

A Cayuga County woman was arrested after deputies say she provided a false identity and fled from law enforcement during an investigation into a reported shoplifting incident at a Dollar General in Cato.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested 37-year-old Shayla E. Lamora of Cato on May 7 following a suspicious person complaint at the Dollar General on West Main Street. Store employees told deputies a woman who had allegedly stolen merchandise earlier in the day had returned to the store and was possibly attempting to steal again.

According to investigators, deputies began interviewing Lamora after she exited the store. Authorities said she provided a false name and date of birth and continued giving the false information after being warned she could be arrested for doing so. Deputies said Lamora then ran from the scene while they attempted to identify her through law enforcement databases.

Deputies said Lamora was taken into custody a short time later and eventually identified herself correctly. She was charged with obstructing governmental administration, false impersonation and petit larceny.

Lamora was processed at the Cayuga County Public Safety Building and issued appearance tickets for Village of Cato Court.
