Two full sections at the Ontario County Landfill will soon disappear under layers of dirt and grass, according to the Finger Lakes Times, as the site moves closer to its planned 2028 closure.
Casella Waste Services told county supervisors this week that crews will cap two landfill areas near Rilands Road after both reached capacity. Workers plan to install liners, add soil and topsoil, seed the land with grass, and complete final grading. The project also includes finishing methane collection wells tied to buried waste.
Casella said it already set aside funding for the capping work as part of the landfill’s long-term closure agreement with Ontario County. The landfill is scheduled to stop operating no later than the end of 2028.
