Professional race car driver Katherine Legge is set to attempt one of motorsports’ rarest feats later this month, becoming the first woman to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
The effort, known throughout racing as “The Double,” would require Legge to complete 1,100 miles across two states and two vastly different forms of racing on May 24.
Legge, 45, is already confirmed for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500, where she will drive the No. 11 HMD Motorsports/AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet. She is then expected to travel immediately to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 later that evening.
Only five drivers in history have attempted the doubleheader, and just one has completed all 1,100 miles. Legge would also become the first non-American driver to attempt it and the oldest competitor to do so.
Cosmetics brand e.l.f. Cosmetics announced Tuesday it will serve as Legge’s primary sponsor across both races, extending a partnership that began four years ago.
“At e.l.f., we believe culture moves forward when more women are given the opportunity to own their stories, break barriers and redefine what is possible,” said Patrick O’Keefe, chief integrated marketing officer for e.l.f. Beauty.
Legge described the challenge as an opportunity to push beyond perceived limits.
“Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly,” she said. “This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourse.l.f., taking risks and trying to do something unique.”
The company plans a large fan activation around the attempt, including interactive experiences at both race venues and digital events on platforms such as Roblox, Snapchat and Twitch.
The Indianapolis 500 will air on FOX, with the Coca-Cola 600 scheduled for later that evening on Amazon Prime Video.
