Kira Fulton delivered a standout performance as the William Smith Herons defeated the Union Garnet Chargers 13-8 in the Liberty League Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon at Urick Stadium. William Smith improved to 17-2 with the victory, capturing its 10th conference tournament title and securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
William Smith set the tone early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes before Union rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the second quarter. The Herons responded with a decisive 6-1 run spanning the second and third periods, regaining control and building a lead they would not relinquish.
Fulton led a balanced offensive effort with six points on three goals and three assists, earning Most Outstanding Performer honors for the tournament. First-year Cat Colvin added five points, including a hat trick, while eight different Herons found the back of the net. Grace Rund controlled possession with a game-high six draw controls, and Casey Fiore anchored the defense with seven saves and four ground balls.
Union stayed within striking distance behind Maddy Schiller’s three goals and an assist, trimming the deficit to 10-7 early in the fourth quarter. However, William Smith answered with key goals down the stretch, including two from Colvin, to put the game out of reach.
The Herons held advantages in shots, draw controls and ground balls, while limiting Union’s opportunities during critical stretches.
William Smith will learn its NCAA Tournament opponent during the selection show on Monday, May 4, at 10:30 a.m.
