Weedsport graduate joins ranks of new state park police officers

A Weedsport graduate is among the newest class of New York State Park Police officers, joining a group of recruits now preparing to serve millions of visitors across the state’s park system.

Aaron Spoor, of Weedsport, was one of 33 graduates from the 20th Basic School of the Park Police Academy, state officials announced Thursday. He has been assigned to the Finger Lakes zone following completion of academy training.

The new officers were recognized during a graduation ceremony held April 30 at Saratoga Spa State Park, marking the end of six months of residential training in Rensselaerville. Recruits completed coursework in criminal law, investigations, emergency response, and field operations, along with hands-on instruction in firearms and vehicle operations.

State Parks officials said the graduates will now enter a 10-week field training program under the supervision of experienced officers before transitioning to full patrol duties.

The 33-member class will be deployed across the state’s park system, which includes more than 250 parks, historic sites, and recreational facilities that draw tens of millions of visitors each year.

Officials said the new officers will play a key role in maintaining public safety at events and attractions ranging from festivals and concerts to outdoor recreation and statewide initiatives.
