First-year Maggie McCarthy shot a season-best 93 to lead the William Smith golf team to a third-place finish at the Nazareth Spring Invitational on Monday at Brook-Lea Country Club in Rochester, as the Herons capped their final tuneup before the Liberty League Championships. McCarthy’s performance paced a steady team effort on the par-72 course.
McCarthy’s round was three strokes better than her previous season best and earned her a strong finish atop the William Smith lineup. Senior Caroline Gannon followed with a sixth-place showing, finishing six strokes behind McCarthy. Tara Valas narrowly missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th, while Sophia Pomposello completed the Heron scoring with a 14th-place result.
Nazareth’s Bethany Wineberg claimed medalist honors with a round of 83, helping lead the Golden Flyers to the team title. Geneseo finished second in the standings, with William Smith rounding out the top three in a competitive field.
The Herons used the invitational as a final preparation ahead of postseason play, building momentum with consistent individual performances across the lineup.
William Smith returns to action May 1 at Teugega Country Club in Rome, New York, for the opening round of the Liberty League Championships, with tee times beginning at 12 p.m. The tournament concludes May 2 with an 8 a.m. start for the final round.
