The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team secured at-large bids to both the Women’s Fleet Race Championship and the Open Fleet Race Championship following its recent performances, earning spots in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association national regattas set for May in Tampa, Florida. William Smith was ranked 16th for the women’s field, while HWS checked in at No. 20 for the open championship.
The Herons earned their berth after a strong showing at the MAISA Women’s Fleet Race Championship in Kings Point, New York, where they placed fourth. The B Division crew of Sabrina Starck and Olivia Wilkins led the effort with a fourth-place finish, while the A Division rotation of Maya Mahoney, Ella Donaldson and Deana Fedulova secured fifth.
On the open side, HWS built its case with a fifth-place finish at the America Trophy in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. The A Division crew of Juan Carlos LaCerda Jones, Cooper Delbridge and Jamie McGuffee finished fifth, while the B Division group of Elijah Goldman, JJ Klempen and Stella Kim placed seventh.
Both teams improved their standing compared to last season’s results, positioning themselves among the nation’s top programs entering championship competition.
Hobart and William Smith will compete in the ICSA Women’s Fleet Race Championship from May 15-18 and the Open Fleet Race Championship from May 19-22 in Tampa, Florida as the program prepares for its national postseason run.
