Hobart lacrosse rallies late to edge St. Bonaventure on Harding’s game-winner

The Hobart Statesmen secured a dramatic 13-12 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Friday night at the Marra Complex, using a late goal to earn their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season. With the result, Hobart closed the year at 3-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while St. Bonaventure came up just short in the tightly contested finale.

The Statesmen built an early cushion before weathering a second-half push, with sophomore Johnny Harding delivering the decisive moment in the closing minutes. First-year Slade Engstrom paced the offense with four goals and an assist, while Harding recorded his first collegiate hat trick. Senior Seamus Schofield controlled possession at the faceoff X, winning 13-of-19 draws and scooping up nine ground balls. In goal, Elhanan Wilson turned aside 10 shots.

Hobart seized momentum early, jumping out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and extending it with a four-goal run in the second to go ahead 8-2. St. Bonaventure chipped away before halftime and carried that surge into the third, outscoring the Statesmen 5-2 to pull within one entering the final period.

The Bonnies took their first lead of the night early in the fourth, scoring three straight goals to move ahead 12-10. Hobart responded behind Bryce Johnson and Engstrom, who tied the game midway through the quarter. After both teams traded defensive stops, Harding broke through with under two minutes remaining to put the Statesmen back in front for good.
