The Hobart Statesmen lacrosse team fell to the Massachusetts Minutemen, 13-12, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Urick Stadium, as a late goal capped a comeback and handed Hobart a tough loss. Despite building a commanding early lead, the Statesmen dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in Atlantic 10 play, while UMass improved to 10-4 and 3-3 in conference action.
Hobart came out sharp, scoring eight of the first nine goals to take control in the opening quarter. David Peterkin led the early surge, finishing with five points on two goals and three assists, while Rufus Robertson and Gordon Bennett each added two goals. Seamus Schofield dominated possession at the faceoff spot, winning 16 of 20 draws and collecting a game-high 14 ground balls, allowing the Statesmen to dictate tempo early.
UMass began to chip away in the second quarter, outscoring Hobart 5-2 to close the gap, and carried that momentum into the second half. The Minutemen continued their rally in the third quarter, eventually tying the game in the fourth. Hobart briefly regained the lead on a goal from Slade Engstrom, but UMass responded again to force overtime.
In the extra periods, both teams had opportunities, with Elhanan Wilson making several key saves to keep Hobart alive. However, after a defensive stop turned into a transition chance, UMass capitalized late in the second overtime, finding the net with under a minute remaining to seal the win.
The Statesmen will close out their season on Friday, April 24 at 7 p.m. when they travel to face St. Bonaventure.
