Police seek photos, videos after vacant Geneva home destroyed in fire

A vacant home was destroyed Sunday evening after a fast-moving fire tore through a structure on Eagle Street, prompting a large emergency response and an ongoing investigation.

City officials said the fire at 8 Eagle St. was reported around 6:56 p.m., with crews arriving within minutes to find the home fully engulfed. Due to rapidly deteriorating conditions, firefighters shifted to a defensive strategy rather than entering the structure.

More than 60 Geneva firefighters responded to the scene, supported by multiple neighboring departments. The fire extended into hard-to-reach areas, ultimately requiring emergency demolition of the structure to fully extinguish remaining hot spots and eliminate hazards.

Officials said the home had been vacant for at least a year. No injuries were reported.

Additional hazards complicated the response, including a downed electrical line in the front yard. Utility crews were called in to secure the scene and shut off gas service, while emergency management, public works and ambulance crews also assisted. Police deployed a drone to aid in assessing the fire from above.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

On Monday, the Geneva Police Department asked for the public’s help, requesting that anyone who captured photos or video of the fire submit them through an online portal. Investigators say the footage could help determine how the fire started and how it spread.
