The William Smith lacrosse team fell to the Wesleyan Cardinals, 10-6, on Sunday at Smith Field, as a decisive second quarter proved costly in a matchup between two nationally ranked programs. With the loss, William Smith dropped to 12-2, while Wesleyan improved to 11-2, using a five-goal run to take control in a tightly contested non-conference game.
William Smith kept pace early, with Kira Fulton and Grace Rund helping answer Wesleyan’s opening push to keep the game within one in the first quarter. However, the Cardinals seized momentum in the second, scoring four unanswered goals while limiting the Herons to just one shot in the period. Mya Waryas led the surge, finishing with five goals, as Wesleyan built an 8-2 halftime lead. The Herons responded in the third quarter, showing resilience as Cat Colvin and Katie Grottenthaler found the back of the net to begin chipping away at the deficit.
Colvin led the offense with two goals, while Mia Falco added a goal and an assist. Defensively, Janey Sypeck anchored the unit with a game-high four caused turnovers, and both she and Grottenthaler collected four ground balls. Casey Fiore made eight saves in goal to keep William Smith within striking distance. The Herons continued to press in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to four, but could not complete the comeback as Wesleyan answered to maintain control.
William Smith will return to action on Friday, April 17 at 4 p.m. when it hosts Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Urick Stadium.
