Marcus Whitman winterguard earns silver at circuit championships

A strong debut in a higher level of competition helped the Marcus Whitman Varsity Winterguard secure a second-place finish at a regional championship event late last month.

The team took silver at the North East Color Guard Circuit Championships on March 28 at Gates Chili High School, competing against programs from across Western New York in its first season in the A1 Class.

The move up followed a championship-winning season in 2025, and the group quickly proved it could compete at a higher level, earning top marks in both Design and General Effect during the competition.

This year’s performance, titled “Mine,” was set to music from the song “She Used to Be Mine” and focused on themes of resilience and personal growth. The program explored how the strength of others can influence how individuals confront their own challenges.

The success comes as the program continues to expand. This year, the Marcus Whitman Band & Guard Boosters launched a cadet winterguard program designed to introduce elementary and middle school students to the activity and build a pipeline for future performers.

The cadet group also performed at the championships, presenting a show titled “Opening Up!” featuring music from the musical “Waitress.”

Both the varsity and cadet teams are directed by Amelia Rasmussen, with additional instruction from Michelle Boylan and Austin Kephart. Show design is led by Rasmussen and Kephart.

Participants in the program represent both the Marcus Whitman and Penn Yan Central School Districts.
