William Smith lacrosse rolls past Vassar behind Luzi’s six-goal performance

William Smith lacrosse delivered a dominant performance Saturday, defeating Vassar 19-6 in a Liberty League contest at the Poole Family Dome to improve to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Senior Taryn Luzi led the charge with six goals, adding three ground balls in a standout effort. The Herons received balanced offensive production throughout, with Cat Colvin recording three goals and one assist, while Delaney Cassidy and Mia Falco each totaled four points with two goals and two assists. Lauren Collins added a hat trick as 12 players recorded at least one point.

After a back-and-forth start that saw Vassar briefly take a 3-2 lead, William Smith responded with a three-goal run to regain control and carried a 9-5 advantage into halftime. Luzi scored three times in the second quarter, helping the Herons build separation.

William Smith pulled away decisively in the second half, outscoring Vassar 10-1 over the final 30 minutes. The Herons erupted for eight goals in the third quarter, highlighted by multiple woman-up tallies and strong transition play.

Defensively, Janey Sypeck led the way with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Ally Orquiola controlled possession with a game-high seven draw controls. Katie Grottenthaler added five draw controls, and goalkeeper Casey Fiore made five saves over 60 minutes.

William Smith dominated statistically, holding a 48-13 edge in shots, a 21-11 advantage in ground balls and a 17-10 margin in draw controls.
