William Smith lacrosse used a dominant start to cruise past St. Lawrence, 12-4, in a Liberty League matchup on Saturday afternoon, opening the game with an 11-1 run to secure its seventh win of the season.
The Herons improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play by controlling the game on both ends. William Smith outshot St. Lawrence 28-18 and held a commanding 16-3 edge in draw controls, led by Grace Rund’s game-high nine.
Delaney Cassidy (one goal, two assists) and Cat Colvin (two goals, one assist) paced the offense with three points each, while Rund and Katie Grottenthaler added multiple goals. Casey Fiore made eight saves to anchor the defense, and Janey Sypeck contributed four caused turnovers.
After St. Lawrence tied the game early, William Smith took over with 10 straight goals, holding the Saints scoreless for nearly 30 minutes. The Herons built a 6-1 halftime lead behind balanced scoring, including goals from Cassidy, Grottenthaler, Mia Falco and Colvin.
The run continued into the third quarter as William Smith scored four more times to stretch the lead to 11-1. Grottenthaler, Rund, Kaia Swamp and Charlotte Crocker all found the net during the surge, putting the game out of reach.
St. Lawrence scored three of the final four goals, but never threatened the outcome. Lauren Collins added the lone fourth-quarter goal for the Herons.
William Smith was efficient in transition, going 18-for-20 on clears while forcing 20 St. Lawrence attempts.
Kira Fulton extended her point streak to 22 games with two assists.
The Herons return home Saturday, March 28 against Vassar with opening draw set for 11 a.m.
