Syracuse fires Red Autry after three seasons at the basketball helm

After a third subpar season at Syracuse, the university will be looking for a new leader for the men’s basketball program. Red Autry was fired this morning, per Jon Rothstein. The change of direction comes after another first-round exit in the ACC Tournament, this year to SMU, and a second consecutive year finishing below .500.

The change will also potentially mark the end of a “Syracuse Family” lineage going back to Roy Danforth, continuing through Jim Boeheim, and ending with Autry. According to Matt Norlander, names to keep an eye on will be Josh Schertz at St. Louis, Bryan Hodgson at South Florida, Joe Gallo at Merrimack, and Luke Murray, who is an assistant coach at Connecticut. Two potential names with ties to the Orange are Mike Hopkins, who is currently an assistant coach and head of player development for the New Orleans Pelicans, and Gerry McNamara, the coach at Siena who guided the Saints to the MAAC crown and a bid in the NCAA Tournament this season.

Autry will end his tenure at Syracuse with an overall record of 49-48, and a dismal 24-34 in ACC play.

UPDATE: Syracuse University officially announced the firing of Autry at 10 am Wednesday.
