Yates County eyes new public information officer role

Yates County lawmakers will consider creating a new communications role as part of their meeting agenda next week.

The proposal would create a part-time Public Information Officer and Program Coordinator shared between the county administrator’s office and the sheriff’s office.

County officials said the position would help coordinate press conferences, public statements, and responses to public inquiries on sensitive or high-profile issues.

The role would also help administer Threat Assessment Management Training funded through a grant program, including coordinating meetings, training logistics, and required documentation.

The estimated annual cost for the part-time position, including benefits, would not exceed $45,688. With partial reimbursement through the grant, the county’s cost would be about $22,844.

Lawmakers will review the proposal as part of the Yates County Legislature meeting scheduled for March 9 at 1 p.m.

Other agenda items include a public hearing on the county’s solid waste management plan, a proposed local law to override the state tax levy limit, and several infrastructure and airport funding resolutions.
