Wayne County law enforcement warn of surge in scams

Wayne County authorities are warning residents to be cautious after a rise in scam reports.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said several scams have recently been reported involving callers asking people to withdraw money from their bank accounts to resolve supposed issues.

Officials said legitimate businesses or agencies should never ask someone to withdraw cash to clear up a pending problem.

Deputies advise residents to hang up if they receive suspicious calls and avoid clicking links or attachments in unexpected messages.

Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly or request payment through hard-to-trace methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or mailed cash.

Authorities say residents should obtain a phone number, tell the caller they will call back, and contact law enforcement if they suspect a scam.
