Three of New York’s top federal leaders are demanding an immediate halt to a proposed immigration detention center in downtown Rochester, according to Spectrum News.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Joe Morelle sent a letter Thursday to the U.S. General Services Administration opposing plans at the Keating Building. They argue a 2021 lease only allows a few temporary holding cells for Customs and Border Protection, not a facility holding detainees for days.
The building on State Street houses a federal courthouse and a daycare center. Local, state and federal leaders have raised concerns about placing a detention operation inside the busy federal complex.
