Drivers are now using a newly completed highway connection tied to Syracuse’s massive I-81 reconstruction, according to CNY Central.
The New York State Department of Transportation opened the new southbound I-81 ramp connecting from I-481 at the Southern Interchange. Officials say the change will give Valley-area drivers direct access to downtown Syracuse and improve traffic flow across the region.
Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez says crews are nearing completion of the southern interchange, with the northbound mainline expected to finish this summer. Work on removing and replacing the aging I-81 viaduct through downtown could begin in late 2026.
