A legal fight is heating up over the future of the shuttered Wells College campus in Aurora. Attorneys for Wells College urged a state Supreme Court judge to reject an effort by the Cayuga Nation to block the $12.5 million sale, according to The Citizen.
The Cayuga Nation claims the 127-acre campus sits on ancestral land and questioned whether the proposed buyer — the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge — has financing. College attorneys pushed back, saying the institute has support from Native American Bank for up to $25 million to complete the purchase and prepare the site for development.
Wells College also asked the court to reject a challenge from the Minerva Institute of Aurora, a competing bidder. A preliminary conference in the case is scheduled for March 11.
