Sabres acquire forward Sam Carrick in trade with Rangers

The Buffalo Sabres have acquired veteran center Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers in exchange for a third-round draft pick along with a sixth-round selection originally belonging to the Chicago Blackhawks, the teams announced Friday morning.

Carrick, 34, has served as the Rangers’ primary fourth-line center this season after signing with New York ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. In 60 games, he has recorded four goals and 10 points while adding a physical edge to the lineup. Carrick has also been one of New York’s most willing enforcers, leading the team in fights this season.

The veteran forward brings extensive NHL experience to Buffalo. Carrick has played 380 career games with the Rangers, the Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was part of Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup Final during the 2024 playoffs, appearing in the lineup at different points throughout the postseason.

For the Sabres, Carrick provides additional depth and flexibility in the bottom six as the roster continues to deal with injuries. Justin Danforth has missed most of the season because of a broken kneecap, while Tyson Kozak is currently day-to-day after dealing with multiple injuries this year.

Carrick is capable of playing both center and wing and has built a reputation as a reliable defensive forward. His faceoff ability could be especially valuable for Buffalo, as he has won more than 50 percent of his draws in each of the last four seasons.

Carrick has one year remaining on his contract after this season with a $1 million average annual value, giving Buffalo a cost-effective veteran option moving forward.
