Deputies investigating a welfare check in Sodus say they found a dog locked in a crate for days without food or water.
Belton V. Dunagan III, 44, of Curtiss Avenue in the Village of Sodus was arrested following the investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the residence in December after a welfare check request.
During the investigation, officers located a dog confined in a crate with no access to food or water. Investigators determined the animal had been left in the crate for two or more days and was suffering.
Deputies removed the dog and turned it over to the Wayne County Humane Society for care and rehabilitation.
Dunagan was charged with overdriving, torturing or injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance.
He was taken to the Wayne County Jail to await arraignment before being issued an appearance ticket. He will return to court in the Village of Sodus at a later date.
Deputies were assisted by the Lyons Veterinary Clinic and the Wayne County Humane Society during the investigation.
