City of Ithaca employees gathered last week for a training session focused on disability awareness and building a more inclusive workplace.
The session took place Feb. 26 and featured John Robinson, president and CEO of the disability employment organization Our Ability.
Robinson spoke with city staff about accessibility, inclusive language, and workplace strategies to support employees and members of the public with disabilities.
“It is so important to share stories of success and growth within the disability world,” Robinson said. “At times it feels like we have worked under the ADA forever, and yet there are still so many questions and conversations to enjoy.”
City officials said the training was organized by the Workforce Diversity Advisory Committee as part of a broader effort to expand education around diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
“In coordinating this session, our goal was to educate staff, deepen understanding of disability inclusion in both the workplace and the broader community, and provide practical strategies to foster a more accessible, respectful, and supportive environment,” said Madlyn Allen, a human resources specialist with the city.
Jeanne Grace, chair of the Workforce Diversity Advisory Committee, said the event drew employees from several city departments and work locations.
“My hope is that this seminar series will provide new perspectives, promote a welcoming and inclusive work culture, and serve as an avenue for staff from across the City to meet and engage in a meaningful way,” Grace said.
City officials said the event marked the first in a series of quarterly trainings focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
