Officials fight ICE site in Rochester

A proposed ICE detention center inside a busy downtown federal building has sparked swift backlash, according to Spectrum News.

Lawmakers say the Trump administration wants to place the facility inside the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building, which houses a courthouse and a daycare. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer called the plan outrageous and demanded transparency from DHS. Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said the location makes no sense given the building’s current use.

Rep. Joe Morelle and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also raised concerns, citing secrecy and safety issues. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has not commented on the reported plan.
