Democrats want to bring back the IRS’s free online tax filing tool just months after President Donald Trump shut it down, according to News10NBC. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and other Democrats introduced the “Direct File Act” to restore and permanently lock in the Direct File program.
The IRS launched Direct File in 2024 to let taxpayers submit returns straight to the government at no cost. Supporters say the tool saved families time and money.
Gillibrand argues the shutdown made filing harder and more expensive for working families. The new bill aims to reverse that decision and guarantee free direct filing moving forward.
