Yates Sheriff’s office marks retirement, DARE milestone

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office is recognizing the retirement of a longtime investigator and the training of a deputy who will take on a new school role this fall.

CID Lt. Arlyn Cunningham retired after beginning his career with the sheriff’s office in 2004.

Cunningham started as a deputy sheriff, was promoted to criminal investigator in 2013 and reached the rank of lieutenant in 2024.

He also served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan while in the U.S. Army.

Colleagues, retirees, area law enforcement leaders and local officials attended a celebration marking his retirement. The office noted a friendly rivalry between Cunningham and Deputy Chad Betts, who were hired one day apart. With Cunningham’s retirement, Betts now holds seniority.

The sheriff’s office also announced that Deputy Nick Fultz completed an 80-hour DARE instructor training course at the Montour Falls Fire Academy.

Fultz will serve as the School Resource Officer at Dundee Central School starting this fall. In that role, he will teach the DARE curriculum, which focuses on helping students avoid drugs and alcohol and make safe, responsible decisions.
