Traffic stop leads to felony drug charges in Auburn

A traffic stop on Auburn’s north side led to felony drug charges after police say a driver failed to stop at a stop sign and was found with nearly 30 grams of cocaine.

Police arrested Cieara M. Nickerson, 37, of Auburn, following the stop Wednesday night.

Officers said they were on routine patrol around 8:59 p.m. when they saw a rented U-Haul box truck fail to stop at the intersection of Seymour and Washington streets.

Police stopped the vehicle near Seymour and State streets and identified Nickerson as the sole occupant and driver.

Officers determined Nickerson’s license was suspended and that the rental truck had been rented to someone else who was not present, according to police.

Further investigation led officers to find two separate quantities of cocaine with a combined weight of 29.9 grams, along with $4,997 in cash.

Nickerson was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, both Class B felonies, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree and failing to stop at a stop sign.

She was taken to the Cayuga County Jail for centralized arraignment proceedings at 7 a.m. Thursday and was released on her own recognizance.
