Forged license plates lead to felony arrest

State Police arrested a Clifton Park man after an investigation into fraudulent EZPass charges uncovered forged license plates tied to his vehicles.

Mazin S. Kakoum, 27, of Clifton Park, was charged Feb. 26 with three counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, a Class D felony.

Troopers said they received a complaint Feb. 25 from a Rensselaer County resident reporting fraudulent activity on an EZPass account.

The investigation led police to a vehicle on River Crest Drive in Clifton Park displaying a forged New York State license plate. The plate matched the victim’s legitimate registration.

Police allege Kakoum owned and operated multiple vehicles using the forged plate, which he reportedly purchased online. The fraudulent plate caused tolls to be charged to the victim’s EZPass account.

Investigators also found and seized two additional forged plates in Kakoum’s possession.

Kakoum was arrested at his home and processed at State Police in Clifton Park. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Clifton Park Town Court on March 18 and released.
