Cornell women’s hockey advances to ECAC Championship Weekend with win over Colgate

Cornell women’s hockey secured a 3-1 victory over No. 13 Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink, advancing to the ECAC Hockey Championship Weekend for the third consecutive season.

The No. 11 Big Red controlled play defensively and received strong goaltending from Annelies Bergmann, who made 30 saves to preserve the win. Cornell opened the scoring midway through the first period when Rose Dwyer finished an even-strength opportunity at 12:01 with assists from Delaney Fleming and Abby Thibodeau.

After a scoreless second period, Cornell extended its lead early in the third on a power-play goal by Avi Adam at 7:29. Piper Grober and Nora Curtis recorded assists on the eventual game-winning tally.

Colgate cut the deficit to 2-1 on a power-play goal from Elyssa Biederman with just over six minutes remaining, but Cornell maintained defensive pressure down the stretch. Georgia Schiff sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Cornell also controlled possession at the faceoff circle, led by Mckenna Van Gelder, who won 26 draws. The Big Red successfully limited scoring chances while capitalizing on key special-teams opportunities.

With the win, Cornell advances to the ECAC Hockey semifinal round and will travel to Lake Placid for Championship Weekend. The Big Red return to action Friday, March 6, at Herb Brooks Arena, with semifinal puck drop scheduled for 4 p.m.
