Seneca County funding for health program at risk

Smoke detectors, lead checks and emergency “go bags” could disappear in Seneca County, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Public Health Director Scott King says Gov. Kathy Hochul cut $1.45 million in statewide funding for the Healthy Neighborhoods Preventive Cornerstone Grant. Seneca County has received $125,432 annually for four years. The money has helped 110 families with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire safety tools, fall prevention and asthma and lead assessments.

Lawmakers approved a resolution urging Hochul and the Legislature to restore the funds. The full board votes March 10. King recently pressed the state health commissioner to reconsider, but Albany will make the final call.
