William Smith lacrosse opens season with win over SUNY Geneseo

William Smith lacrosse opened its season with an 18-8 nonconference victory over SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday evening at Stiles Field in the Poole Family Dome.

The No. 12 Herons improved to 1-0 behind a career performance from junior attacker Mia Falco, who recorded a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Taryn Luzi led all scorers with four goals, while Catalina Colvin totaled two goals and two assists. Grace Rund and Ally Orquiola each added three goals, and Kira Fulton contributed one goal and three assists in the season-opening win.

William Smith established control early, scoring the game’s first three goals and closing the opening quarter on a 7-0 run to build a commanding lead. The Herons continued their offensive momentum in the second quarter with four more unanswered goals, taking an 11-2 advantage into halftime.

The Herons finished with advantages in shots (33-26) and shots on goal (21-13) while winning 19 of 27 draw controls. Rund posted a career-high 13 draw controls, tying for fourth on the program’s single-game record list. Both teams recorded 13 ground balls, and William Smith successfully cleared all 14 attempts.

Defensively, Caitie Baker led the Herons with two caused turnovers, while Lily Kuhn added three ground balls. Graduate student goalkeeper Casey Fiore earned the win with nine saves, including key stops during a third-quarter Geneseo scoring run.

Rosemary Mahoney led the Knights with two goals and two assists.
