Nearly six years after filing, the Diocese of Syracuse has officially closed its Chapter 11 case, according to Spectrum News. A federal bankruptcy judge approved a plan that sends $176.1 million to survivors of sexual abuse through a victims’ trust.
Insurance companies will cover about $76.1 million of that total. The diocese will fund the rest, including at least $45 million from its parishes.
The process began in June 2020 as the diocese faced numerous abuse claims. Wednesday’s ruling finalizes the reorganization and clears the way for payments to survivors.
