RRH adds adaptive radiation system

Rochester Regional Health has installed a new adaptive radiation therapy system at Rochester General Hospital, expanding its cancer treatment capabilities.

The health system announced Wednesday that the Ethos Linac Adaptive Radiotherapy system is now in place.

The technology uses daily CT imaging, artificial intelligence and rapid replanning software to adjust radiation treatment plans in real time. Physicians review and approve each updated plan before treatment.

The system accounts for natural anatomical changes that can occur between radiation sessions. That allows clinicians to better target tumors while limiting radiation exposure to healthy tissue.

“This technology represents an important step forward in the way we deliver radiation therapy,” said Dr. Jeffrey Haynes, executive medical director of cancer services for RRH. “By adapting treatment in real time, we can better protect healthy tissue while targeting tumors with greater accuracy.”

Health officials said the adaptive approach may reduce the number of treatment sessions for some patients and improve efficiency for care teams.

The addition strengthens the hospital’s radiation oncology services and expands access to adaptive radiotherapy in the region.
