Ontario County residents press board on ICE policy

Eight Ontario County residents asked supervisors to block local help for ICE operations, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Speakers at the Feb. 19 meeting urged the board to pass a resolution barring county resources or facilities from supporting federal immigration enforcement.

They said they back Sheriff David Cirencione’s policy, which states deputies don’t detain people over civil immigration issues and only execute federal criminal warrants signed by a judge. Still, they want the board to formalize that stance.

Maria Bucci presented a draft resolution citing a recent ICE raid in Cayuga County and rising ICE detainee numbers statewide. Other speakers shared concerns about civil rights and due process. Board Chair Bill Wellman directed residents to the sheriff’s public statement but took no action.
