Excavators are tearing down the former Shurfine in Weedsport to make room for a new Byrne Dairy gas station and convenience store, according to The Citizen. The regional chain won site plan approval in late January after months of heated debate.
Some residents pushed back, saying the village of 1,700 needs a grocery store, not another gas station. Others argued the project beats an empty building. Meetings drew packed crowds, delays and strong opinions from neighbors and business owners worried about traffic, lights and competition.
Byrne leaders say the 4,200-square-foot store will offer expanded grocery options and jobs. Local boards approved needed variances and the site plan, and construction has now begun as officials continue working to address community concerns.
