Driver charged after struggle at Sterling store

A traffic stop in Sterling turned into a brief struggle outside a convenience store, deputies said.

Richard J. Graff Jr., 44, of Rochester, faces charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, speeding, operating without an inspection certificate, and aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree.

A deputy spotted a red Dodge Ram 1500 traveling 62 mph in a posted 40 mph zone on State Route 104 near Fintches Corners Road around 4:39 p.m. February 22. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the truck turned into the Pit Stop Convenience Store parking lot. The driver exited the truck and went inside the store.

The deputy located the driver inside and asked him to step outside to conduct the stop. Deputies said the driver argued, refused to provide identification and registration, and began to walk away. When the deputy attempted to gain control, the driver pulled away and became aggressive. After a brief struggle, the deputy secured him in custody.

Authorities later identified him as Graff. Deputies transported him to the Public Safety Building for processing and issued appearance tickets for Sterling Town Court on March 11 at 6 p.m.
