Police finally caught a man they say stole more than 60 iPhones from a Walmart store — nearly three years after the heist.
Anthony D. Capers, 32, now living at 159 Avenue E in Rochester, faces felony charges following the long-running investigation.
The Macedon Police Department reported the arrest on Saturday, February 14, after Elmira Police stopped a vehicle and found Capers riding as a passenger. Officers discovered he had an active felony warrant tied to the 2023 theft.
Investigators say the case dates back to February 2, 2023. Capers allegedly posed as an employee of Outsourced Sales Leader (OSL) to gain access to the store’s master keys. Police say he used those keys to open a locked storage container inside Walmart.
Security cameras captured him selecting more than 60 iPhones, valued at $51,982, before leaving the area.
A Wayne County Grand Jury indicted Capers on April 2, 2025, about 14 months after the theft. The court then issued a Superior Court Warrant for his arrest.
Police described Capers as a “man on the run” until officers in Elmira discovered the warrant during the recent traffic stop. Elmira Police turned him over to Macedon officers.
Prosecutors charged Capers with Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a Class C felony. He also faces Conspiracy in the Fourth Degree, a Class E felony, and Criminal Impersonation in the Second Degree, an A misdemeanor.
Officers took Capers to the Wayne County Jail for CAP Court arraignment. The court released him on no bail. He will return to Wayne County Court on March 5.
The Macedon Police Department thanked the New York State Police and the Elmira Police Department for helping with the case.
