Ontario man charged in welfare fraud case

A Wayne County man faces felony charges after investigators say he collected thousands in public benefits he didn’t qualify for.

Deputies arrested a Town of Ontario resident following a welfare fraud investigation in the Town of Lyons.

Eric Marino, 60, of Lake View Knolls, faces charges of Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree, Grand Larceny in the Third Degree and Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say the charges stem from a joint investigation by the Wayne County Department of Social Services and the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities allege Marino failed to report income he received from Uber while also collecting SNAP benefits through the county.

Officials say he fraudulently received more than $4,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

Deputies took Marino to the Wayne County Jail for processing and a CAP arraignment on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., according to the release.

The Wayne County Department of Social Services assisted with the investigation.
