Hochul boosts budget, climate fight looms

Gov. Kathy Hochul just added $2.7 billion to her state budget plan, pushing total spending to $262.7 billion, according to Spectrum News 1. The 30-day amendments skip any changes to New York’s 2019 climate law, though talks continue behind the scenes.

The increase includes $1.5 billion in new aid for New York City as Mayor Zohran Mamdani tackles a $7 billion gap. Another $150 million will help municipalities statewide. Higher tax revenue and investment returns helped drive the bump.

Hochul has floated revising how emissions get counted under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Climate advocates praised the lack of rollbacks but expect fierce negotiations before the April 1 budget deadline.
