William Smith basketball dropped a tightly contested Liberty League matchup, falling 53-51 to Vassar on Friday evening in Bristol Gym. The Herons dropped to 3-21 overall and 1-16 in conference play.
Junior Giana Lobozzo paced the Herons with a team-high 20 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range while adding five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Amelia McCulley contributed six points and six rebounds, while Ava Lobozzo and first-year Kira Ostovar each finished with six points. Ostovar connected on both of her attempts from beyond the arc.
Both teams struggled offensively early, with William Smith holding Vassar to 21 percent shooting while building a 9-7 lead after the opening quarter. The Brewers responded in the second period, and the teams entered halftime tied at 21-21.
The Herons found their rhythm in the third quarter, shooting 57 percent from the floor and outscoring Vassar 18-16 to take a two-point advantage into the final frame. Momentum continued to swing throughout the fourth quarter as both teams traded baskets.
Ostovar drilled a three-pointer with 2:21 remaining to give William Smith the lead, but Vassar answered with the game’s final three points in the closing minutes to secure the victory. Maureen Regan led all scorers with 23 points for the Brewers, while Sierra McDermed added 10 rebounds.
William Smith held a slight 35-34 edge on the glass but committed 23 turnovers compared to Vassar’s 19.
William Smith closes the 2025-26 season Wednesday, February 25, against Bard at 2 p.m. in Bristol Gym.
